First, a little explanatory note:

Some years ago, I used to buy my eggs from a lady
called Fiona, who lives in Hillswick, about 3 miles
from my home. She had this notice outside her
garden wall: "Fresh, free-range eggs, £1.40 per half
dozen. Help yourself!" Underneath the notice, was
one of those plastic storage-boxes, with a plywood
lid on top, all well weighted down with a large stone.
(Otherwise, it wouldn't have been there long, with
some of the gales we get!) This plastic box held
the eggs, in the usual cartons of six, plus a money
tin, for your payment. (How's that for confidence in
the honesty of your fellow-man?!) Each egg-carton
bore a label, proclaiming: "Free-range eggs, from
Happy Hens, laid for you by the girls, Maggie, Joey,
Charlotte, Jeannie, Susan, Brenda, Kathleen and Fifi.
Please return the empty box." (Incidentally, those
first seven names were the names of Fiona's nearest
female neighbours, and I presume "Fifi" was herself!)
I had bought eggs there for several weeks, and then
noticed that the latest box had the names of only the
first four "girls". Intrigued, I wondered if four
of Fiona's hens had died. So, when I returned that
egg-carton, empty, I stuck a bit of paper inside its
lid, with the following verse:

Egg-ceptional Layers....

Charlotte and Maggie, Jeannie and Joey,
Each name is quite common, and not at all showy;
So now, may I ask the one question that begs,
Why do they all lay such uncommon eggs?
Enormous and brown, each with bright orange yolk;
Just laying those monsters, can't be any joke!
A strenuous effort! A jolly good show!
To each of the girls, my complements go!

Now I come to the saddest part of my rhyme:
For those other four girls, has the Umpire called "Time"?
Where's Susan, where's Brenda, where's Fifi, Kathleen?
Why is it, that their names are no longer seen?
Have they spread out their wings, and fluttered on high,
To celestial hen-runs, way up in the sky?
Should that be the reason, I offer my prayers
For the souls of those four egg-ceptional layers!

But, of course, that isn't the end of the story! My
very next half-dozen eggs, had a label bearing all
eight names again, so when I returned that empty
carton,I stuck another verse inside the lid, which
read:

Resurrection?

Have Susan and Brenda, have Fifi, Kathleen,
Returned to the hen-run, where they had once been?
Or, am I a "short plank", so incredibly thick,
Who instinctively grasps the wrong end of the stick?

To an egg-laying life, have they been resurrected?
Or, in this rash assumption, should I stand corrected?
To unravel this riddle, I'm sadly unable.......
Could it all be as simple as.......two types of label??!

I believe Fiona wondered for months, who the idiotic, inquisitive
egg-box poet was, until my daughter, Eileen, finally told her!;):D

RE: Members Poems

Hello, Angus. I think you're going a just peerie bit too far, both poetically and geographically, with your comparisons! Since I was born in Unst, maybe the "Ultimate Unst Upstart" might be more appropriate! This latest subject of mine has opened up a whole new avenue to explore; don't be surprised if you see weird interpretations of "Hickory Dickery Dock" "Three Blind Mice", etc. appearing on the forum! Anyway, I'm glad my latest little ditty gave you a laugh! ;)

I'm afraid I won't be going to Glasgow in April. For one thing, I can't really afford two trips "sooth" in the one year, and not being able to secure a front-row seat, which is more or less, an essential position for me, with my deteriorating eyesight. Also, I don't fancy having to pay almost double, just to see our lovely lass, from a distance, for only half a concert, while having to impatiently endure those four ugly (comparatively speaking!) young gentlemen, for the other half! :w00t: As it is, I'm eagerly and impatiently waiting, for the next six days to pass, when I'll be sitting in the very middle of the front row in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, for Katherine's Christmas Concert.....can.....not.....wait!! :D:D

RE: Members Poems

......  .... Brilliant!
The 'Shakespeare of Shetland' does it again (or is that the 'Bard of Burra', the 'Burns of Bressay' or the 'Scribe of Scalloway'?)!!! :D
If you come down to Glasgow for the concert in April, maybe you could give us a recitation and we could celebrate by ringing the Bell's! :D
Thank you for that little ditty, Jack. I had a good laugh.
Angus. :)

RE: Members Poems

Hello again, everybody; this thread has lapsed for a while,
so here's a little contribution which may interest somebody.
Strange subject, I know, but here's how it came about: My
Grandson, Roy, (seventeen) and still at our local high-school,
is awaiting his chance to get into Abertay (Dundee) University.
As part of a recent assignment, his English teacher asked him
to write a piece of poetry, or prose, "discussing" any old
nursery-rhyme, and provided an example, relating to "Three
Blind Mice". The example was a "modern" poem, which
didn't rhyme or scan, of course! I wrote the following little
discourse on the old rhyme,"Humpty-Dumpty", just to give
him my idea. Roy tells me he's definitely going to show
it to his English teacher, along with his own work,
(which will be prose) when he hands it in! I just
wonder what "Sir" will think of it? :w00t:

RE: Members Poems
kleepiesneeter (24/05/2012)
Hi again, Angus; would this have been in the oil
industry, perhaps? Nothing too serious, I hope?
Yes, our Katherine has done remarkably well in the
DWTS contest; second place isn't to be "sneezed at",
considering the millions of U.S. voters, supporting their
own country-folk! Thank you for the kind (but undeserved)
words, about my last poem to Katherine. Shakespeare
can rest easy, I reckon!

Here's another little "tongue-in-cheek" ditty, I cobbled
together yesterday, on hearing the result of the contest;
I'm sending a copy to lovely Katherine, along with my
next letter; perhaps she may be amused! Anybody else
who reads this, I hope you like it! ;)

D.W.T.S.

(Decreasing Weight Through Sweating!)

Our Katherine came second, with her "pro" partner, Mark,
Right up to this contest, her dancing "kept dark";
All the pundits considered she hadn't a chance,
But Katherine has shown them, how well she can dance.

One question we pose to that Goodman, called Len,
What took you so long, to grant them a TEN?
A premier judge, your scores were too low;
You surely could see, they were best in the show!

At the Waltz or the Tango, the Foxtrot or Jive,
Paso Doble or Salsa, Katherine brought them alive;
Shaking her "Naughty Bits", she showed how it's done,
And her sexy "Welsh Wiggle" was second to none!

Of professional dancers, this question we ask:
Although good at your dancing, can you "multi-task"?
At dancing and singing, she's our number one choice,
"Terpsichorean" Katherine, with her sweet Angel Voice!

Near unknown in America, are her pure vocal arts,
Yet her skill, charm, and beauty, won millions of hearts;
Stateside, she came second, but she's always our winner,
P.S. Lovely Katherine, PLEASE DON'T GET ANY THINNER!

RE: Members Poems

Sorry to have been away with a medical issue, Jack, good to see you all over the site. I would need to read it a few more times to eek out the inferences although I think it would be beyond me, way over here on Vancouver Island. Well done and I am appreciative of your unique perception in your writing, it helps me to see in different ways. I'm working on a more epic poem about Katherine's performances but that one will take a while yet. In the meantime I thought I would post another short one that popped into my head (that's how it works for me) while traveling on the bus. I know I'm not a writer, I do try, and I always have fun in the process, sometimes bouncing the ideas off of friends and we all have a laugh. Here, for fun, it is. Any suggestions for a title?

When I was young I knew not why
The color blue was in the sky.
I did not know of time and space
I could not see this was my place.

Alas I grew and learned a lot
Didactic lessons I was taught.
The predilections of that past
Became the values that would last.

Although I see through ancient eyes
Ignoring knowledge, those blue skies
The choice to learn was mine alone
And with that, now, I know my home.
RE: Members Poems

Hello Joseph!
I've just this moment, found your very kind comment about my poetry; some of it's OK, I suppose, but much of it's mediocre, at best, and downright ridiculous at worst. Well, that's my opinion, anyway, and I can honestly say I've never written one that I was completely satisfied with. And that goes for my attempts at art, as well! But thanks for your encouraging comment, anyway, it gives me the motivation to go on, and try again! ;):D

RE: Members Poems

Hi Sarah. I am delighted you chose to share your poem - well done! I very much like the way you described your weather, it seems like the same characters are here in Cobble Hill. Being young, you have a way of seeing that reminds me of my youth and I thank you for that. I am not a writer of any sort but I have fun trying and for me, that's the point. I'll be watching for your next one - goodonya.

RE: Members Poems
kleepiesneeter (17/02/2012)
Hello again, Michael.
I'm glad you liked my poetic and artistic efforts! Yes, I'm an old codger, most likely a lot older than you; I'm a "1933 model", so will be 79 when July comes! Of course, here in Shetland, where I live, we have no trains, and never have had, so my only experience of coal-powered locomotives has been on the UK mainland, when I was doing my National Service in the RAF, in the early 1950s. The very first trains I'd ever seen, or travelled on, were steam trains.
Yes, of course, you have my permission to show my attempts at both art and poetry, to whoever you wish; (if you think them worth showing!) I imagine most people who
try poetry, are old codgers like me, who have few other interests, and
time on their hands. Having said that, I tried composing a verse or
two, when I was about your age, but I have to confess, none of them
were anywhere near your standard. Keep up the good work! You and me both! We must be on the same coal powered, steam driven train (there were no diesel locomotives when I was young). I did find the link for the post office (thank you!), and your drawings on another thread - I have a response there - you're better than good, Jack, my goodness. May I have your permission to show others over here your poems and drawings, please? I too have bogged down a bit on my more epic poem I'm working on (I'm trying to capture one of Katherine's live events) and I too have just completed a short one while awaiting a vision (hmm). I turned to that which never fails for me, my wife of 40yrs, Bonnie. I have not written her one in a while so here it is. Yes, I am a hopeless romantic, woo-hoo! I would like very much for anyone to show us one their poems - it seems unfair that you and I, Jack, have center stage all to ourselves - I like a crowd, it's more fun! :P

When we met I had no doubt that you would be the one.
To share our lives, both good and bad, and try to have some fun.

With love you showed your faith in me in small and tender ways.
The hugs and smiles, hopes and dreams, you filled my future days.

You made me smile when things were tough, I couldn't help myself.
Just laughing, dancing, out of reach, hold on, are you an Elf?

And when you lay asleep at night I thank your mom and dad
For having you and giving me the life, in their hands had.

I'm stronger now, a better man, I will not turn away.
There is no time that I regret, my love, I'm here to stay.

Michael
February 16, 2012
RE: Members Poems

Hi, Everybody!
It seems a long time since I last posted one of my poetic (?) efforts here, but the
"inspiration" has kicked in again! I have lately been working on a poem for our lovely
Katherine, but have got somewhat bogged down with that one, seemingly unable to
get my old brain to function! That very circumstance led me to compose a rather wry
comment on the ravages of old age; this is the result; I hope you like it! :w00t::D

RE: Members Poems

Hello again, Michael.

Yes, Vancouver Island is certainly a long way from the UK! Perhaps this may help your problem with a self-addressed envelope. In this forum, if you go into "General Chat on Katherine", then into "Pinned Topics", then into "Katherine's Management Address"; at the bottom of Tricia's post, there's a link to Royal Mail's Website, which apparently allows you to print your own pre-paid labels, envelopes, etc. I haven't had any need to use this service myself, so I don't know how it works, but I hope you may find it of use.

I'm looking forward to reading your new poem, when you get it finished; my new one has got rather bogged down at the moment, so I'm afraid it'll be a case of waiting until inspiration returns! You mentioned artists in your post; I don't know whether you've seen any of my artistic efforts? They're under "Members' Artwork", in "Off Topic Chat". Not that mine are anything to write home about, but if you find them, let me know what you think!;):w00t:

I hope to hear from you again as soon as you get the poem completed.
RE: Members Poems

Well hi and thanks, Jack. Having read your posted poems, I would say you have more talent for it judging by the range of what you write. I like seeing through the eyes of your poetry and definitely do continue to write and post them. I too would like to have Katherine sign a copy of my poem but that could be a challenge here on Vancouver Island, off the west coast of Canada. I'm trying to figure out how to get a self addressed, postage prepaid, return envelope from the UK so I can send a copy to be signed from here. I doubt that I will ever be able to see Katherine at a live performance so this would mean a lot to me.
Keep up the great work Jack. I'm working on another poem in a very different vein that I will post as soon as I can wring it from my fingers.
I would like to say that this forum has a great group of people and some fine artists too. Being new to any forum, there is much learning for me from everyone here and I appreciate everyone's input. Live Long and Prosper, Jack.

RE: Members Poems

Hello, and BRAVO! Michael!
I've just found your poem, and I reckon
you should keep up the good work!
It rhymes and scans! That's what I
call poetry! I haven't tried a verse here
for a long time, but oddly enough, just
yesterday, I started another poem
for our lovely Katherine. As I said before,
who could give anyone better inspiration?
I hope your excellent poem will give
others the courage to put pen to paper
(or fingers to keyboard!), and let their
imagination do the work! The one I'm
working on may take some time, and I
intend first sending it to the beautiful
lady herself. Later however, I'll probably
post it here. Like I said, keep up the
good work! You're good at it :D:D
RE: Members Poems

Hi Jack. You are not alone. I like your vision through your poetry - I think it is really good - enjoyed every one. Come on folks, don't be shy like me. If I can try this, anyone can.
There is a complex story behind it and oddly enough I have never written a poem. I only discovered Katherine existed last early June '11. It took me 2 months to sort out what I was feeling and about 2 hours of sheer turmoil trying to get the words right when I couldn't hold it in anymore. Being a first effort I hope it will be seen as a thank you to Katherine for this great gift she has, perhaps unknowingly, given me and others. Rarely felt so alive. Here goes.

(Few will know a chance in life
To do what you have done.
Through you an angel's spirit worked,
Gave back the world to one.)

-The power of an Angel-

Do I love you, time will tell.
My heart soared free before it fell.
The many forces found in life,
Arranged to fill my days with strife.

Until one day it all was taken,
Left me nothing, all was forsaken.
With emptiness, no answers why,
I made the choice that I must die.

I forced my heart into a keep.
I could not feel, I could not weep.
Only thus could I survive,
Not really dead, but not alive.

But God took pity on my plight.
She saw, to live, I needed flight.
In her great wisdom sent to me,
An angels' spirit in form of thee.

Whose voice and beauty tore that door
Right from its hinges, forever more.
My heart was freed to soar again,
I gazed upon your face and then...

Found calm and peace I had not known.
Your singing with your magic tone,
Restored my strength, gave back my joy,
Unleashed my soul, no longer coy.

To be alive, feel love for you,
For freeing me, can this be true?
How does one thank what you have done?
This thought I plead, for you, the one.

No question asked, no expectation.
I offer this, no hesitation.
Just be yourself, live truthfully.
And share your love with those you see.
Accept the thanks that's offered you,
From one you saved but never knew.

Michael
August 25, 2011
RE: Members Poems

Superb!! :D:D:D:P:P

RE: Members Poems

Thanks again John, and Lee as well;
praise indeed (undeserved) from
both of you!
