I was very saddened to read today of the death of Kate McGarrigle, one half of the Mcgarrigle sister and mother of Rufus and Martha Wainwright.

I first became interested in their music with the album Love Over And Over from 1982 with its upbeat title track but the nature of their releases meant I only listened to their music now and again. The idea of a family and friends concert always intrigued me and an idea of what one would be like can be found on The McGarrigle Hour and The McGarrigle Christmas Hour and both are well worth the listen.
I toyed with the idea of seeing their Christmas Show at the Royal Albert Hall in December but in the end other commitments didn't allow. Sadly, I never realised how ill Kate was otherwise those commitments would have gone by the board.
Kate was a refreshing oddity in a success driven world and weill be greatly missed.

| Hi Phil That is very sad news indeed, I had a lot of respect for The McGarrigle's, I first saw them singing on the original series of the Transatlantic Sessions and also I bought The McGarrigle Hour DVD. I took a while to warm to them but I soon realised their exceptional talent, a very great pity Here are some special memories of mine from The Transatlantic sessions Kate & Anna McGarrigle (with Dick Gaughan) - Wild Mountain Thyme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_AYAg9zPzc Kate & Anna McGarrigle - Hard times come again no morehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YrfLnlrquo Kate & Anna McGarrigle : Talk To Me Of Mendocino http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fcBEGjK3cM

| John, Thanks very much for the links.
The last song Kate wrote was Prosperina which she sang for the first time at RAH.

Watch and prepare to be sad. McGarrigle songs also sounded good when other artists such as Emmy Lou Harris and Linda Ronstadt recorded them. Heart Like A Wheel by LR was a great favourite long before I'd heard of the McGarrigles.

I was at the concert in December at the RAH. I am a great fan of Rufus Wainwright. I have been to several of his shows, and he often called Kate to come and sing with him, or accompany him on the piano. The affection between them was palpable. I was so glad that Kate lived to see Rufus's opera. She was at the opening night in Manchester.Rufus has announced a tour this year to many venues both here in the UK and all over the world. I know Kate's spirit will be with him. I'm sure she was an inspiration to all who knew her. She looked so very frail at the RAH, but was determined to do her part in the family show. We did'nt know how sick she really was, but noticed that the whole family was very protective of her. Her memory will live on through her music. My personal favourite song is "Talk to me of Medocino". So beautiful! Diana.
