It was with great sadness that I heard yesterday of the death of John Birch. John was a former member of the RPO and was still working regularly with us as a keyboard player right up to the end at the age of 82. He would play harpsichord in the Messiah, piano on pop concerts and was at his best on the Royal Albert Hall organ of which he was Curator. His numerous performances of Saint- Saens Organ Symphony were always a great event and he made sure the this mighty instrument was heard to it’s full, often drowning the orchestra in the process.
He was a spritely jolly character, whose enormous repertoire of limericks and outrageous jokes, delivered in a highly educated cultured manner was a source of great amusement to us all backstage. So much so he was often nicknamed the Vicar for his clerical-like repartee.
John will be missed so much by so many throughout the UK and other parts of the world. It is hard to believe he will no longer be among us with his friendly greeting and hilarious stories.

RIP
